Crawley Down Village Fayre 2023

It was the hottest day of the year, but no amount of blistering heat was going to stop this year’s village fayre from taking place. Stallholders began arriving first thing with sun lotion and water to hand. From face painting to WI cakes and baby clothes to jig saws there was a wide range to sample and browse past, along with the chance to catch up with the many familiar village faces, both sides of the tables, enjoying the day.

The heat didn’t put off those performing either. The young dance team from Gracie Grooves put on an athletic display, pom poms and cartwheels complete. Having travelled from Cornwall, the BMX act showed all sorts of tricks performance on a bike. The highlight was when the rider bounced onto the roof of a van and then jumped off again with great precision much to the relief of Andrew Metcalfe who had been carefully positioned with his legs apart to provide the landing area! In thick uniforms the Samba band, beat their drums with gusto and the Samurai Sword team retained their focus. Meanwhile the Fire Brigade, didn’t seem to think it was hot enough! They did a demonstration of why you don’t put water on a chip pan fire. The ensuing fireball rose high, with the apparent 2,000 degree heat it emitted giving an even hotter blast to the spectators!

If was a fun but tiring day. The raffle, drawn at the end, included many impressive and generous prizes. The winners should have been contacted by ‘phone. Details are also available on the CDRA website. Our thanks to the many sponsors and all those who contributed to making the fayre a success
